Shibuya Curse Containment Guide: How to Contain a Curse and What to Do With It

Last updated:

How to contain a curse in Shibuya [Beta]: defeat it, hold [E] CONTAIN until CONTAINED shows, then deliver the specimen at HQ for +Merit or +Sin, or devour it with J.

Quick answer

Defeat the curse first, then hold [E] CONTAIN on its downed body until CONTAINED shows on screen. After that you have two known options: deliver the specimen at HQ — the HQ Lab gives +Merit and Black Net gives +Sin — or press J to devour the contained curse.

  • Containment, not exorcising, is Shibuya's own stated way of dealing with curses
  • Only a defeated, downed curse can be contained
  • J devours a curse you have already contained

How to contain a curse in Shibuya [Beta]

Containing a curse is a two-stage interaction: the curse has to go down first, and the body is what you contain.

  1. Defeat a field curse. Fight it until it is downed. The field curse Brute is the worked example: defeating it dropped a loot box with the message "You have received Brute Tooth x1."
  2. Hold [E] CONTAIN on the downed body. Walk up to the curse and keep E held on the CONTAIN interaction.
  3. Watch for the confirmation. When CONTAINED appears on screen, the curse is contained and ready for what you do next.

Keep the kill and the contain separate in your head, because a downed curse gives you two different things. The loot box is what defeating Brute dropped — that reward comes off the kill itself. Containment is a separate action you take on the body afterwards, so do not walk away the moment the loot message pops: the CONTAIN interaction is still on the body, and holding E there is what actually contains the curse.

What to do with a contained curse

Once CONTAINED shows on screen, two actions are known: hand the curse in at HQ, or devour it.

Deliver it at HQ for Merit or Sin

Inside the HQ building, the NPC Agent Hoshino offers the dialog option "1 I've got a specimen for you." That dialog is the delivery route, and a specimen can go to either of two destinations, each adding to a different counter:

Delivery pointWhat you gain
HQ Lab+Merit
Black Net+Sin

That choice is the whole decision at the hand-in: the same kind of delivery adds Merit at the HQ Lab or Sin at Black Net, so where you take the specimen decides which of the two counters you gain.

A quick note on the game's wording: in the field the action is called containing; at HQ the dialog calls the item a specimen. The game's labels point to the curse you contained, though it never states the link outright — you contain on the downed body, then deliver through Hoshino's dialog.

Devour it with J

The official controls list one further action for a contained curse: J to devour it. The control's own wording carries the condition — devouring applies to a curse that has already been contained, so there is nothing to devour until you have held [E] CONTAIN on a downed curse and seen the confirmation.

What devouring gives in return is not stated alongside the control; the listing names the input only. If you want a documented payoff, the HQ delivery is the route with stated gains, +Merit or +Sin.

Why contain instead of exorcising

Shibuya's own description tells players to contain curses instead of exorcising them, and it presents containment as the game's defining way of dealing with them. The same description places containment inside the core loop next to climbing the sorcerer grades, earning cursed techniques through hard trials and fighting in virtual Tube Simulations — so a contained curse is not a kill you skipped. You can then deliver the specimen for Merit or Sin, or devour the contained curse with J, and the [E] CONTAIN hold on a downed body is the small extra step before both of those options.
